Game Review in Brief: Jackass (Yay Continued Insanity!)I don't have much to say to this one besides...yeah, Jackass is now a video game. For those of you that love watching the stupidest masochistic entertainment imaginable (and there's no judgment there--that's what they're trying to do!), now you can make people do the stupidest masochistic things imaginable. Isn't that great?

The burning question I have about this little gem is how did they manage to fit a physics and ragdoll engine in a PSP and DS game? No two attempts at a stunt will turn out the same way; it really looks like a person did something ridiculous and physics just sort of took over. (My favorite two examples of ragdoll physics: Stair Dismount and Truck Dismount, two simple but surprisingly awesome games. You can find downloadable versions of those games there, making this parenthetical the best part of this post!)

Don't expect the game to hold your attention like a good RPG or have the sticking power of an FPS: except it for the physical humor and deadly stunts that it offers. Thank goodness Chris Pontius is textured in game and not really wearing that tiger-striped thong. *shudder*

Fans of Jackass and people who always wanted to plummet from a skyscraper but never got up the nerve will love the game.

Highly Recommended: Unreal Tournament III Coming to Mac OS XWith Epic Games' Unreal Tournament III now available for PC, PS3 and scheduled to make an appearance on Xbox 360 in late spring/early summer, it's apparently time to toss the scraps to the traditional stepchild of the video games world, Mac players. News that UT3 as well as Gears of War would probably be coming to OS X in the near future is old news, but with overall sales of UT3 across all platforms coming in lower than expected the thinking of the powers that be must be why not get the Mac users in sooner rather than later.

As it is now the "early '08" release of UT3 on the Mac--which according to MacSoft's Ryan Gordon "will be developed natively instead of being ported over using Cider"--may actually beat the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament III to the market, which is scheduled for May '08. So, all you Mac users with enough processing power to run games on the Unreal 3 engine--which includes Gears--take heart. You may just be getting a little more respect in the gaming world.

Highly Recommended: CES 2008: Hands-On With a Revamped NostromoThere are a lot of keyboard-replacing PC controllers that claim to be able to amp up your game. Belkin's Nostromo SpeedPad line was one of the first to come out, and their n52 is still one of the most popular among hardcore gamers. It wasn't completely bug free--some units would have keys that would stick or fail, the thumb button was difficult to press, the scroll wheel wasn't terribly accurate, and you had to install drivers on any computer you wanted to use it on. Despite these problems, its ridiculous flexibility make it an extremely useful controller and mine still gets heavy use after almost 4 years.

After listening to their loyal users, Belkin has completed a major overhaul to the original n52. Dubbed the n52te, it appears to have resolved all the complaints about the older model. The backlit keys are more "clicky" and sit closer to the keybed, resulting in a much more responsive feel. The detented scrollwheel has been similarly reworked and rolls very smoothly. A hat switch has been added to the D-Pad, and it can now be pressed directly down like the analog stick on PlayStation controller. Pressing the thumb button above it no longer results in major sprains and a trip to the hospital either.

Belkin has made the new Nostromo SpeedPad n52te much more portable as well. The macro-able, customizable keys no longer require that their profiles be stored on your computer--they are all contained inside the unit. There are no separate drivers that need to be installed for it to work. Increased usability, portability, and ergonomics means that the n52te is a definite must-have for serious FPS or MMO players. The n52te ships out on January 20th, and you can preorder one now for .99.

PC Gaming: Belkin n52te Gaming Pad Pushed Back to January
Belkin's killer app for gaming hardware, the Nostromo 52 Tournament Edition Speedpad (a.k.a. the n52te), has been pushed back to a January release. Hardware-wise, the newest version of the popular Belkin n52 gaming pad doesn't add much beyond the inclusion of SBL technology (SBL = "Sexy Blue Lighting"), but the n52 is a sturdy and popular workhorse and a little aesthetic spruce-up certainly won't hurt it.  Most of the actual improvements here are under the hood: the inclusion of onboard memory and Razer software allows the unit to store/modify/swap profiles for individual games, plus unlike its predecessor the n52te supports 64-bit Vista out of the box.

The n52te was originally slated for a November '07 release (and in fact the website still says it), but for those that expected to see one under their Christmas trees and wondered what happened, the controller won't actually hit the shelves until mid-January.  In the meantime, you can pre-order the controller or read more about it.

PC Gaming: Game Preview: Call of Duty 4: Modern WarefareFor the first time in the series, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare leaves World War II's battlefields and marches on a more contemporary setting. Playing both a US Marine and a British SAS, you are required to travel to troubled sites across the globe to engage rogue operations and terrorists, sometimes in more covert ways that we've seen in a Call of Duty game so far. Use advanced technology, land and air strike coordination, and awesome firepower to combat scourges around the world. The game also sports a heavy multiplayer engine that should foster a new online community of trigger-happy virtual patriots. Probably not for the squeamish.

PC Gaming: Hilarious new World of Warcraft ads
Yup, the WOW pop phenomenon just keeps on rolling.

Legend has it that there are still a few PC and Mac users out there that have not logged their share of hours playing World of Warcraft, so with the holiday shopping frenzy kicking into high gear as we speak the folks over at Blizzard are hard at work assimilating these stragglers with a couple of new hilarious ads featuring Mr. T and the venerable James Tiberius Kirk (OKA William Shatner).

In the end the price of a monthly membership at worldofwarcraft.com is more expensive than the drop dead price of the game here at Amazon, but the ads are free, so enjoy.

Classic Arcade Games: Pac-Man's Back, but his designer is retiring.Announced today at the Xbox 360 Pac-Man World Championship, Toru Iwatani, the designer of Pac-Man (originally titled Puckman), who is retiring from Namco, has left one final gift for those of you with a Xbox 360 and a Xbox Live Account -- "Pac-Man Championship Edition."

Gaming News: Working for the Wii-kend, well sort of
Legend has it that there are still a few people frantically searching for a Wii to shove under the tree, bush, menorah, whatever, this holiday season. If you are unfortunate enough to fall into this category fear not, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime has your back, at least it seemed like he did last week when he announced, via Kotaku.com, that many big box retailers would be seeing "large shipments" of Wiis over the weekend. The problem is that, get this, he announced that big box retailers would be seeing "large shipments" of Wiis over the weekend.

No that's not a typo, just an unfortunate truth that needed to be said twice. Reggie's announcement pretty much guaranteed that unless you were ready to line up like those still huddling together for warm outside the NYC Nintendo World Store you were SOL on the Wii front yet again. Still, it looks like many people managed to get their hands on the little white box that could, although if you look at the eBay listings for last weekend it would appear that most of those folks figured that it being late December that what they could also do was make a tidy profit on the time they spent in line.

God, I hate the mall.

PC Gaming: Game Review in Brief: Virtual Fighter 5Sega's latest Virtual Fighter is the harbinger of awesome content to come for the Playstation 3. The VirtFights up until now have all been some variation of excellent or another, but this one really showcases the PS3's talents. The controls and character balance have finally reached a level where I, as a relatively non-versus gamer, can enjoy this stuff. Unlike the normal button-mashing confusion of the predecessors, VF5 is really accessible to those in the 3D fighter world for the first time--although, as always with the VFs, anyone who devotes enough time to mastering the truly sick combos will always have the advantage.

Additionally:

  • Two new characters, Mexican wrestler El Blaze and Monkey Kung Fu master Eileen, round out the cast of 17 dynamic fighters
  • Challenge
their opponents in unique types of arenas, in stunning &
highly-detailed 3D fighting environments inspired by locations around
    the world
  • New offensive moves let players move around their opponent from the side and back, allowing players to be more strategic
  • Customize characters with the enhanced attachment system and customization engine, giving players more flexibility than ever
  • Next-Gen presentation includes HD resolution (widescreen) and Dolby Digital 5.1CH sound
Now, admittedly, this is a rehash--it's the 5th game in a line of games with the same premise and characters. Unlike a lot of rehash, though, this one doesn't get boring. All of your favorite concepts from those that came before had persisted into this game, and the graphics on this one are simply stunning. It's like a glorious makeover; everything you know and love, but in a shiny new package. And the new features are just enough to keep you surprised.

PC Gaming: Game Preview: Aion
The latest MMO (Massive Mulitplayer Online) game to hit the market is Aion: The Tower of Eternity . Now I've got a lot to say about MMOs, and about this one in general, but I'll try to be brief, and maybe pontificate in a later post. To my mind, there are three big players in the MMO world right now: City of Heroes (and Villains), WoW (of course), and Lord Of The Rings. Yes, there is Everquest II, which does have a market, but the days of Everquest are over, so it's these three I'll be comparing Aion to.

MMOs are games without endings, of course, where you build and define characters for yourself and adventure across the landscape gaining power, etc.--no real plot that drives the whole game, no conclusion...think of the The Sims only fantasy, violent and awesome. In that regard, Aion has stiff competition. If you want to play a game forever, day after day, the above games have the advantage: WoW and LotR are pre-existing franchises (which lend for more material to draw on without anything seeming recycled), and City of Heroes is basically an homage to every superhero franchise. Aion, by contrast, is new to the market, and a fantasy to boot, which WoW (and EQ) already have covered.

What you have instead of an established franchise to draw from is a concept so ancient it goes beyond the biblical: Angels and Demons. Now, in all my researching and previewing I've never heard those two words mentioned; but instead you choose to play either "The Chosen" or "The Fallen," to the frame of reference is well established. This game actually seems to have a Meta-premise, which could prove to be interesting: the Tower of Eternity exists as a gateway into the Abyss, and acts as a portal between dimensions; this awakens Dragons, who come to seek vengeance on both sides of the conflict. This Meta-premise may actually help single Aion out as a game to play, for its an area in which other MMOs have feared to tread (the WoW premise is "It's a Fantasy!!" and CoH's is "It's Superheroes!!"...Lord of the Ring's is "It's...Lord of the Rings!! What do you want from us?!"). I would expect to see expansions that further the meta-story along, possibly changing landscapes, removing playable types as well as adding them, etc. This is all speculation on my part, but the developers over at NCsoft seem to be placing a lot of emphasis on the story aspect, so here's to hoping, anyway.

Another area that has a lot of emphasis, of course, is the graphics. Which, when you watch that first video, look amazing. I was truly intrigued by what I saw of the landscape. It looks like a fantasy epic if the Myst folks designed it. The second video is a bonus treat: its presumably about costumes, but really it's a couple of minutes of the playable character types dancing. I don't know why, but it made me laugh (keep in mind you can make these characters all move like this, which seems strikingly realistic to what I've seen thus far).

The Crytec game engine will allow you to scale sheer walls, fly through the sky (into clouds!), and the game boasts social, economic and cultural storylines as much cinematic as they are interactive. Which all adds up to very exciting possibilities. As much as other MMOs are interesting, what I'm hoping for here is a truly immersive world. I can play the characters and missions in WoW and CoH, but I'm not really wrapped up in the "second life" I'm supposed to be in the middle of. This game seems the first poised to do that, with the exception of maybe  Star Wars Galaxies, which sadly fell apart under its own weight.

This game is set to release in April, but seems well worth the wait. I'll let you know more when we reach the release date, but keep this game in mind. Could be the next big MMO thing.

Classic Arcade Games: Game Preview in Brief: Atari Classics (Evolve)
As a video game fan who has too many fond memories of old school Atari and Nintendo to ever let new games get to the top of my favorites list, I was stoked to hear about this release. Atari Classic takes 11 of your favorite old school Atari games and "evolves" them by updating the graphics, sound, etc. The graphics may be "improved," in that they don't look like just different colored lines anymore, but it's still the quick and dirty 2D world you expect, filled with the same repetitive awesomeness from childhood. And trust me--this is the one case where repetitiveness can be awesome. The games you get: Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Battlezone, Centipede, Lunar Lander,
Millipede, Missile Command, Super Breakout, Tempest, Warlords, and...Pong. Of course Pong. Always Pong.

The only thing that would be better is if you could also play the old school graphic versions of the game. But wait, you can! Oh snap. Not only do you get these 11 games in original form, it's said that another 60 games from old-school Atari come packaged on one disk. Once upon a time, a huge arcade machine the size of a modestly-sized adolescent was needed for just one of these games. Now seventy of them come on a small disc. How technology is changed--but that doesn't make Pong any less cool.

Classic Arcade Games: Game Preview: Sonic Rivals 2 (for PSP)Sonic!!

Furthering my understandable love of older games, I couldn't let Sonic Rivals 2 go without a mention. Coming in November, this game really brings the old Sonic the Hedgehog feel back. I loved those games--and I'm totally humming the tune from the lava levels right now. Anyway, to me, Sonic will always remind me of a simpler time, when it was okay to be a lighting fast talking blue rodent out to save the world.

The Rivals games are cool in their own right, as well. A platformer with head-to-head competition against noteworthy characters (Knuckles, Shadow, Tails etc.), this game is actually about fighting the people who were usually story-devices or friends. It's really cool to take a favorite old game and say, "What if this were a little more like Street Fighter?" The result: awesomeness. And the best part is you can play against other humans controlling the rivals of the game; online multiplay, of course, or two PSPs with only one game between them. I long for the days when I could stay up until 3 am playing games, because Sonic Rivals 2 is that kind of game.

ACIM: What did you play over the weekend?Apologies to our faithful readers that wondered whether we were in the doghouse with our significant others last week, and hence no TGIF post. Have no fear, were were merely busy on Friday, off on an adventure North to Vancouver for a visit to EA Canada to check out some new games (you'll hear more about that soon).

So I present to you the first, and probably only, ACIM ("Aw Crap, It's Monday") post. Here's what we played:

El Guapo:
I played
the new Pirates! title for Sony PSP) Core . One of the most addicting games I've ever played.
Of course, it is a port of a classic... but who can deny being a pirate? Y'arr.

Garaphin:

I finally got around to unlocking the multi-player mode in Warioware: Smooth Moves (Wii) and it's stellar. Darts is really fun and so is the "hot-potato" mode. Also spent some time late last night with World Of Warcraft: Burning Crusade (PC/Mac) running around Outland with my guild.

Hobson's Choice:

I went retro this weekend. Well, as retro as you can
consider November of 2006. Gears Of War (360) and Elite Beat Agents (DS) were in heavy rotation down in the basement while the the lady of the house was away. There, much beauty was destroyed and the rantings of Commander Kahn still
echo.

kr0g:

World Of Warcraft: Burning Crusade (PC/Mac) consumed my weekend...

Gaming News: CES 2008: RetroDuo Keeps It Old SchoolIf you're an old-school gamer like me then you have a bunch of your old cartridges hiding in an attic somewhere. So I must have been one of the (seemingly) few who felt excitement running across the RetroDuo gaming console. The RetroDuo plays your old NES, SNES, and Genesis cartridges, so if your original consoles bit the dust years ago like mine did, here's a pretty easy way to get your retro gaming on. It comes with its own controllers, but your original paddles will also work.

RetroDuo can load two carts at a time and comes in two flavors: either a 16-bit version that will play SNES and Genesis games, or an 8/16-bit version (pictured right) that plays NES and SNES games.

Sure, the more web-savvy among you could use PC console emulators to play your old games. But if you miss the old-school feel of sitting in a beanbag chair in front of your TV for six hours on a Saturday, this will have you getting your childhood on in no time.  No pricing or availability information was available at the booth, but surely you're looking at a price tag much lower than with which any of those consoles debuted.

So what are you playing this weekend, or what are you looking forward to playing in the near future?  Not a ton of new stuff got released this week, but still lots of good games ripe for the playing out there.

Anybody checking out Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2  for the 360?  How about SSX Blur for the Wii?  There is lots of buzz around next week's God of War 2 for the PS2 as well... who's going back to the first God of War to hone their skills in preparation?

Highly Recommended: Check out the new GTA IV trailerIt was originally a little disappointing when GTA IV was pushed to early spring '08, but then again that makes it more or less the biggest thing on the horizon. Rockstar is making the most of this by keeping the videos coming which is a good thing, especially given the fact that there hasn't been a ton of info released on the game. Trailer #3, "Move Up, Ladies" released today and looks great. I'd say the hype is building.

Highly Recommended: Super Mario Galaxy sells 500K domestic units in a HUGE first week
For the last few months Super Mario Galaxy has been positioned to be the best thing since sliced bread in the Wii universe. So you can just imagine how a carb boy like myself would be a little put off by an early review in Variety that not only wasn't overly complementary of the game, but was somewhat critical of the Wii as a platform; sacrilege! By the look of the press release that Nintendo put out yesterday countering this critical black eye with a bucket load of exuberant reviews, this was a double whammy that could not be left unchallenged. Some of those reviews were:

GameSpot.com: "Super Mario Galaxy "has tons of appeal for both the less experienced player and the longtime gamer. ... If ever there were a must-own Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy is it."

Yahoo!: "... you'd be hard pressed to find (a game) as genuinely enjoyable as Mario's latest. If you own a Wii, you should own this, too."

1UP.com - "Galaxy proves that Mario matters just as much today as he did 25 years ago, and that makes him one of a kind in this medium. But don't play Galaxy simply because Mario is the timeless godfather of gaming. No, play Galaxy because it's fantastic."

The Press release goes on to toot Nintendo's horn a bit more:

"Super Mario Galaxy had the strongest one-week debut of any Wii game to date and has also become the best-selling Mario title ever in its first week, with U.S. sales of more than 500,000, based on internal sales figures," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "It makes an easy gift choice as the holiday shopping season kicks off."
Yes indeed, the public wants a good game as does Nintendo, but regardless how that pans out money talks. And with 500,000 copies sold domestically prior to the beginning of the official holiday rush and Super Mario Galaxy touring mall kiosks around the country through January 8th, there will definite be plenty of that. Now, if every one who wanted to buy a Wii could only get one. That would be the perfect storm. The Wii has been out for over a year now. Come on Nintendo what's up with that?

Playstation: Sony (Finally) Expanding on PSP's PotentialSony has been busy as CES launching new TVs, new camcorders, and new Walkmen, but they haven't forgotten about the PlayStation lineup. In addition to providing show attendees with the chance to try out the upcoming Little Big Planet, Sony also made time for several announcements that continue the evolution of the PlayStation Portable.

The biggest potential news concerns how owners of the PS3 and PSP will utilize Blu-ray movies in completely new ways. Soon, Blu-ray movies will include a smaller copy of the film optimized for the PSP. Just pop the disc in your PS3, connect your PSP and the movie transfers for your viewing pleasure while on the go. As a user of a variety of extremely slow freeware applications that rip DVDs to the PSP format, this news has me salivating at its simplicity. Obviously, the potential exists for game discs as well, but that's not confirmed yet.

The PSP Slim will also shortly receive a firmware update that adds Skype as a feature. By signing up for an account, you'll be able to use the PSP to make and receive phone calls to and from other Skype users for free and to and from landlines and cell phones for a very cheap whenever you're connected to a Wi-Fi network. If you own an original PSP you're sadly out of luck on this feature. Kotaku is reporting that the reason is that the original PSP doesn't have enough built-in memory to handle Skype's application. Look for some sort of headset solution to be announced shortly.
